Before we can save energy, we need to know where it’s going. You cannot manage what you do not measure.
1. Understanding Your Bill
Grab your most recent electricity bill. Don’t just look at the total amount; look for these two specific components:
- Fixed Cost (Power Term): What you pay just for being connected to the grid, regardless of use.
- Variable Cost (Energy Term): What you pay per kilowatt-hour (kWh) consumed. This is where your habits make a difference.
2. Identifying “Energy Vampires”
Did you know that devices in “Standby” mode can account for up to 10% of your total bill? Walk through your home and look for these common culprits:
- Red or orange standby lights on TVs and game consoles.
- Phone or laptop chargers left plugged in without a device.
- Kitchen appliances with digital clocks (microwaves, ovens).
3. Establishing Your Baseline
To see progress, we need a starting point.
The 24-Hour Task: Look at your utility meter today and record the reading. Check it again exactly 24 hours later. Subtract the first number from the second to find your Daily Baseline (kWh).
Action Item: Introduce Yourself!
The best way to learn is by doing and sharing. Please reply to this thread with the following:
- Your Goal: Why are you taking this course? (e.g., lower bills, eco-consciousness).
- The Vampire Hunt: Name one “Energy Vampire” you found in your house today that you didn’t realize was drawing power.
- Your Baseline: If you’re comfortable, share your 24-hour kWh usage!
Next up: In Lesson 2, we dive into the biggest energy consumer in your home: Heating and Cooling. See you there!
