In the previous module, we tackled the “Big Spenders” (Heating and Cooling). Today, we focus on the “Small Stuff.” While one lightbulb or one phone charger won’t break the bank, dozens of them running 24/7 create a significant “leak” in your wallet.
Lesson 3.1: The LED Revolution
If you still have old incandescent or halogen bulbs, you are essentially heating your home with light. 90% of the energy used by an incandescent bulb is wasted as heat.
The Math of Switching
Let’s look at the ROI (Return on Investment) of replacing one 60W bulb with a 9W LED:
Annual Savings = ((60W - 9W) * 5 hours * 365 days / 1000) * 0.15€/kWh
That is roughly 14.00€ per year for just one bulb. If you replace 10 bulbs, you’ve saved 140.00€ annually—and the LED will last for 15 years!
Lesson 3.2: Hunting “Energy Vampires”
As we discussed in the Audit (Post 1), “Energy Vampires” are devices that suck power even when turned off.
The Worst Offenders:
- Set-top Boxes & DVRs: These often consume almost as much power “off” as they do “on” to keep recordings ready.
- Game Consoles: “Instant-on” modes are convenient but can cost you 20€–50€ per year in idle power.
- Desktop Computers: Sleep mode is better than nothing, but “Shut Down” is always better for your bill.
Lesson 3.3: Smart Power Management
You don’t have to go around unplugging everything manually. Use technology to do the work for you:
- Smart Power Strips: These can detect when your TV is off and automatically cut power to the DVD player, speakers, and game console.
- Mechanical Timers: Perfect for things like festive lights or aquarium heaters that only need to run at specific times.
- Smart Plugs: Use an app to ensure your home office is “completely dead” between 10 PM and 7 AM.
Action Item: The Bulb & Strip Challenge
It’s time to take action!
- The Swap: Identify the one lightbulb in your house that stays on the longest (e.g., the porch light or kitchen light). If it’s not an LED, swap it today.
- The Kill-Switch: Install a power strip for your “Entertainment Center” or “Computer Desk” so you can turn everything off with one click at night.

Next up: Lesson 4, where we optimize the Kitchen and Laundry—the “Wet” side of energy savings.
