After heating and cooling, your Water Heater is usually the next biggest energy hog, followed closely by your kitchen and laundry appliances. Today, we’ll learn how to get things clean without cleaning out your bank account.
Lesson 4.1: The “120°F / 49°C” Rule
Many water heaters come from the factory set to 140ºF (60ºC). This is often unnecessarily hot and poses a scalding risk.
- The Adjustment: Lowering your water heater to 120ºF (49ºC) can save you between 3% and 5% in standby heat loss annually.
- Insulation: If your water heater is warm to the touch, it’s losing heat. Consider an “insulation blanket” for older models to keep the heat inside the tank.
Lesson 4.2: Kitchen Efficiency
The kitchen is the heart of the home, but it’s also an energy furnace.
- The Fridge “Breathing Room”: Ensure there is at least a 2-inch (5cm) gap between your fridge and the wall. If the coils are dusty, your fridge works 20% harder to stay cool.
- The Dishwasher “Eco” Myth: Modern dishwashers actually use less water and energy than hand-washing. Always wait for a full load, and use the “Air Dry” setting to skip the energy-intensive heated drying cycle.
- Lids On: Always cook with lids on your pots. It boils water significantly faster and keeps the heat in the pan rather than heating up your kitchen (forcing your AC to work harder!).
Lesson 4.3: Smarter Laundry Habits
Heating water accounts for about 90% of the energy used by a washing machine.
- Cold Water Wash: Modern detergents are designed to work perfectly in cold water. Switching from hot to cold can save you over 60€/year.
- The Dryer is the Enemy: Whenever possible, air-dry your clothes. If you must use a dryer, use Wool Dryer Balls to reduce drying time by up to 25% by improving airflow.
- Clean the Lint: A clogged lint filter is a fire hazard and an energy drain. Clean it every single time.
Action Item: The Kitchen & Laundry Audit
Time to get your hands a little dirty (to get things cleaner!):
- Check your Water Heater: Look at the dial. If it’s above 120ºF (49ºC), dial it back.
- Vacuum the Coils: Carefully vacuum the dust off the back or bottom of your refrigerator.
- The “Eco” Test: Run your next load of laundry on “Cold” and your dishwasher on “Eco/Air Dry.”
- Share with us: Reply below: What temperature was your water heater set to? and Did you notice any difference in cleanliness using the Cold/Eco settings?
